If you are interested in purchasing a rat,
let me first say that rat's need the company of other rats
so please get 2 rats. If you get a male
and a female, you'll end up with lots and lots and lots of
babies....way more than 2
rats. Get 2 rats of the same sex. You don't want lots
and lots of babies. They love the
company of each other and will play with each other when you
aren't playing with them. One single rat
living by itself will become very lonely and sad and become anti-social.
GET 2 RATS. Two rats are no more work than one. Rats that
live together in pairs will be really happy and
content.

Make sure you buy good quality nutritious
food for your rat. You need to get rat food and not food for
hamsters, or guinea pigs or other small animals. Rat food
has all the important vitamins for a well balanced diet.
Rats also love treats like apples, carrots, raisins, broccoli
etc. Rats love just about any kind of food. You can feed
them food that you eat too like potatoes, rice and even
cooked pasta without sauce! Rats love chocolate but make
sure you only give them a little bit because it isn't
healthy for them to have too much. I give my pet rats one
single chocolate chip as a treat once a
week. Rats really like cheerios and corn flakes too!
Rats should not
eat cheese or other milk product. Cheese and milk is hard to digest and often causes
diarrhea or blockages.

rats. Greenies help keep your rats teeth trimmed too!

You want a cage that will offer enough room
for 2 rats. A cage with 2 floors is best because then each
rat can have its own 'space'. Hamster cages are not good
homes for rats. They are too small. Aquarium's are ok but
not very easy to clean. You want to get a cage that has lots
of ventilation and has a slide out bottom for easy cleaning.
You need to clean your rats cage at least once a week. Rats
are really clean animals so if the cage smells, clean it
more often.

Please don't use cedar or pine shavings in
your rats cage. Cedar and pine can cause respiratory illness
and your rats will cough and be unwell. The best litter is made
from reclaimed wood pulp waste. It contains no pine or cedar
which has been linked to pet health problems. Its is made from
natural, biodegradable fiber which has odor
control, absorbency and is safe and environmentally
friendly.
Believe it or not, rats can be litter
trained! Mine are. They do their business in a litter pan.
To train your rat to go in a litter pan, just pick up a few
'raisins' (rat poop) and put them in the litter box. They'll
get the idea quickly!

Carefresh is the bedding to use in
your rats cage. Please do not
use cedar or wood shavings. Carefresh is

keep your rats respiratory system healthy. |
Rats can be litter trained! Just
take some rat 'raisins' (poop) and put them in the
litter box. This teaches them where to go & if you
place your rat in the litter box right after they
urinate, they'll soon learn that this is the place to
do that too! (well, most of them learn it...some just
don't) (Tip: Use different litter in the litter
box. Don't use their bedding in the litter box) |

My rats love their hammocks and spend hours
sleeping in them. It hangs from the top of the cage and they
can get in and out easily. Rats really need some toys to
keep them busy. Bird toys are
good and so are simple things like toilet paper rolls. White
cotton dog rope bones are great for climbing on!
